Reflection part two

During Part 2, I felt a further enhancement in my knowledge of orchestration, not just applying it to the woodwinds but to general orchestration. Also, I have learnt to analyse compositions and identify possible main elements, like melody or accompaniment, and additional embellishments. Furthermore, I have learnt how to assign instruments that fit the expression of the material given or chosen for arrangement. During the listening, I felt that my perception of timbre and a combination of timbres has moved up to a considerable level. Consequently, I feel that my understanding of orchestration and arrangement has improved, and now I look forward to the next part. Thanks to my tutor’s constructive feedback, I have understood and reinforced how to balance the textures in a composition. I feel that balance in music can be applied to all devices and components, from the assignation of instruments to dynamics, textures, form etc. However, I also feel that too much balance could potentially produce still and uninteresting work. After analysing successful composers and their compositions, it seems that to stand out from the crowd, sometimes applying extremely unusual and unbalanced components could achieve a new standard in music.
