Upon finishing part 1 of the orchestration and arrangement course, I feel that my understanding of the three components of the creation of music, composition, orchestration and arrangement, has been properly understood and absorbed. Discovering the overtone series to distribute the notes of a chord has provided an excellent asset to my understanding of orchestration. The inclusion of analysis and a structural diagram in the phase of composition or arrangement has also been beneficial towards my new compositions, exercises and assignment. Reflecting on the theoretical material of this part of the orchestration module, I feel that it is also applicable to all the other sections of the orchestra except for the percussion. The listening process, for now, has changed to a more orchestrator point of view, listening to the colours and what instruments are used to create variety and in what context. Along the module, I am refreshing my knowledge of tonal harmony, which I feel was out of practice due to focusing on atonal and other aspects of modern music. I feel a good practice will be to merge both tonal and modern methods of composition. The books suggested have also been acquired, and I feel they will further help to gain knowledge for the rest of the module and beyond.
