Listening to Space 2

In this listening, I’m going to explore how Giovanni Gabrielle (-) makes use of the space in his work In Ecclessis (), what effect does he achieve, and any additional notes.

Having listened to spaces 2, I feel the same principles of the pieces in the exercise listening to space 1 apply to this piece. It will seem that the antiphonal choir effects are present as per the spatial division of the choir, creating a sense of movement and space within the performance area. The placement of the choirs seems to add a surround sound to the piece. The instruments also appear strategically to accompany the choir and create a ‘puzzle-like’ effect. This placement is evidence of the sonic depth Gabrielle makes in the work. Also, there’s an echo effect as the physical space’s reverberation is created by the pause between many phrases. These echoes add an extra dimension to the space. It will seem that the brass section has a secondary significant role, and the rest of the instrumentation fills the gaps in the space.
