Assignment three

Reflection Assignment three

For my third assignment, I was tasked with arranging a piece of music for a choir of my choice. I decided to create a clarinet choir arrangement of a piano nocturne. My goal was to create timbral contrast between the clarinet and alto clarinet and to add weight to the bass and contrabass clarinet. Thanks to the helpful feedback from my tutor in previous assignments, this task was relatively straightforward and more manageable than expected.

To ensure the balanced use of instruments, I assigned bass clef material, such as the repetitive thematic motifs from the left hand to the bass and contrabass clarinet. I wanted to explore the unique qualities of each instrument, and although I had to use some ledger lines, I understood that this is acceptable for reed instruments.

One challenge I encountered was adding harmonic colour to parts of the composition lacking in the original piano version. To address this, I added a variety of dynamics to make the piece sound like the original, with a few enhancements.

Overall, I believe my arrangement is a success as it enhances the performance of the piano by creating more colour and interest while balancing the use of instruments and dynamics. I am pleased with how the clarinet choir arrangement turned out. I enjoyed arranging and experimenting with different musical elements to create a unique and compelling interpretation of the piece.
